Evening Song
by Fr. Dennis Grabrian

Evening at Lafayette Reservoir - photo by Fr. Dennis Grabrian

Creator God, we bow to you,

While earth spins slowly into the night.

One with the unseen universe

We praise your majesty and might.

The evening breeze flows o'er the land

As hills gaze toward the waning sun.

Creation stops to watch once more

In awe before the light is gone.

As twilight purple deepens dark,

Before the stars begin their dance.

You gently lay to sleep the land

To rest until the birth of dawn.

Long shadows of the eve descend,

Our gifted day is soon complete.

Our minds fall still, we watch for you.

Our hearts are open; you enter in.

With gratefulness we raise our voice,

Remembering precious gifts bestowed.

You walked with us, you touched our hand.

Enfold us now with silent love.

We thank you as our day now ends,

For life, for joy, that all are one.

Accept our love we give you now

Before our eyes close in your peace.

O gracious God, awaken us

To freshness of the fragrant dawn.

But if you take us in the night,

Then draw us to your heart’s embrace.

All praise to you, Creator God,

And Christ, our way, our truth and life,

and Holy Spirit, comforter,

Now and for endless days. Amen.
