1. The Perfectionist
ego-resentment, the passion is anger
by Torre Waag
If
you find yourself in the role of the Perfectionist you seek to be impeccable
in all things. Day to day, this means you notice when things aren't right
and of how they can be improved. You do your utmost to be scrupulous and
correct, and you resent it when you fail or when others fall behind. How
is it that others can live less noble lives? You often fit into the good
boy or good girl archetype, always responsible, your word is your bond.
The downside to this is that you rarely relax. You tend to see things
in two dimensions: good and bad, right and wrong, black and white with
few shades of gray in-between. In fact, yours is the most critical point
on the enneagram; you are inwardly critical of yourself and others, and
this makes others feel judged. Others may experience you as an angry or
critical person. They don't understand righteous indignation. You may
notice that you regularly feel agitation over the little things in life.
This is your passion. This is your anger. On the low side you may be rigid,
angry, unforgiving, and endlessly picky. On the high side you are the
honorable judge, the mentor who brings out excellence in others. Think
of Ms Manners, Hillary Clinton, St Augustine, Martin Luther, John Calvin,
and Emerson's essays. Every once in a while when you stand outside the
play, you may glimpse the Divine Perfection that is always present in
everyone including yourself and in all things. That which you seek is
already here.
