Gratefulness
for Smells
Smells are great memory teasers. Allow yourself the pleasure
of remembering a favorite smell, and compare it with the favorites
of others.

I love the smell of the hayshed when it has been filled with sun-warmed bales of hay and the feeling of gratitude that washes over me that we can feed our animals another winter.

I have two favorite scents that remind me of my childhood: my mother's roses and laundry that has been dried in the sun. Flowers have always brought calm to me when I smell them and I would rather perfume my house with them than anything else. The smell of fresh dried sheets reminds me of a simpler time that wasn't quite so hurried.

I love the smell of forests when I take nature walks. The earth is so calming to all the senses. There is nothing better than breathing deeply in the woods. Many things smell beautifully separately also. Leaves and moss are two of my favorites.

I have always loved my sense of smell. And have often been teased for it, because I will often smell something that others do not see the value in smelling. I have a long list of favorite smells, but one of my favorites is dirt. It explains why I can spend hours in my yard, weeding, planting, raking, etc. And when the smell of dirt is not readily available I have found it in a bottle. For those who want to capture a memory or maybe help someone else appreciate their sense of smell or you just want to smell your favorite when you "need" it (dirt helps me to relax & fall asleep), you will want to check-out the fragrances by Demeter (google the name & you'll find the resources). Happy smelling!

Once I overheard two elderly women talking very warmly to each other in the locker room. The entire room smelled like the pool and various bath products. Quite without warning I began smelling Thanksgiving turkey cooking. I realized that the very appreciation that these two women had for each other reminded me of sharing and giving thanks on Thanksgiving. Smells are amazingly powerful!

Every morning, after my 3 children left the house ,I smell their pyjamas, and this fragrance contains all their little souls, their laughs, their weekness, its the joy of having children.

I remember the smell of monsoon rain on dry mud, the smell of long bread toasted over a flame after being sandwiched with butter. I remember a old room in my grandfathers house where my aunt used to dress with the smell of powder puff and perfume.
The smell of mud floors in the village coated with cow dung as binder.

I can not resist smelling the papers in a new book, and the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil. Perhaps they are attached to early school days. I usually smell pretty much every thing - a dress, the laundary, my lipstick, my perfume on my wrists on regugular basis. But now I am adding them to my gratefulness list.

there is something about the smell of cotton in a new judogi. No other cotton smells like it. Every time I smell it, it brings me back to when I was ten years old and started this beautiful sport.

I love the smell of burned fire crackers. It connects me to the Christmases in my childhood in EL Salvador. Strong recently Burned papers and fireworks... lingering in the air after the strong sound and display of lights...It was as if a miracle was to occur inmediatly right after the sound, the lights and the smell..
