During the ten years of their friendship preceding marriage and throughout their journey to Lambarene in French Equatorial Africa, Helene Bresslau (Schweitzer) served as confidante and encouraging soulmate to Dr. Schweitzer. Their daughter Rhena Schweitzer Miller has edited a collection of their correspondence, The Albert Schweitzer-Helene Bresslau Letters, which enables us to appreciate all the more the influence of these two souls, partnered in their service to the ideal of "reverence for life."
