Birthday of Pablo Casals (1876-1973) Spanish cellist, composer and conductor; peace activist. Music Festivals founded by Casals and held in Prades, France and in Puerto Rico honor great works of music performed by leading artists. Pablo Casals began each day with a walk in nature, then playing Bach Suites, seeing God infused throughout. He became the world's greatest cellist, and believed it was his obligation to share with the world the beauty of this music that transcended cultural and political borders. He refused, however, to play in places practicing or supporting tyranny and repression. He earned the United Nations Medal of Peace in 1971. Learn more of Casals' life and work here. Some quotes by Pablo Casals: Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. The love of one's country is a natural thing. But why should love stop at the border? The last word is life; the great secret is love. « back | ||||||||||||||||||||
