The Laubach literacy program offers skills, books, correlated readers, and teachers’ manuals associating words, pictures, and their phonetic likenesses. Adults and children learn to read in their own language and to teach others without the need for academic study that’s beyond the economic capability of many illiterate persons. "To promote literacy,” wrote Laubach, “is an undertaking on the same plane as the recognition and incarnation of fundamental human rights."
