Birthday of Bede Griffiths, OSB Cam. (1906 - 1993) British-born Benedictine monk who bridged East and West as a practicing Christian with a Hindu lifestyle in Shantivanam, South India. We hear in his message a call to recognize and revere the Source from which each religion arises. Fr. Bede, born Alan Richard Griffiths, was a convert to Roman Catholicism. His ecumenical insights led him to embrace apparent pairs of "opposites" and integrate cultures and faith traditions, while honoring the uniqueness of each. In his last public lecture on December 13, 1992, Fr. Bede spoke these inspiring words: "The tremendous power of the Spirit is abroad in the world today, and it is everywhere you go. On every continent people are discovering this new understanding of the Spirit; and that is where we all ought to be."
