Birthday of Marie Curie (1867-1934) Born Marya Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland, Mme. Curie's intellectual gifts manifested early in her life. In addition to her chemistry and physics research endeavors, she served for 30 years as a professor in universities, including the Sorbonne. She founded the Curie Institute and Foundation for the study of therapeutic applications of radioactivity. Mme. Curie advised, "You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be the most useful."
